Beat The Heat- Tips on Staying Cool
Here is some advice from money saving expert Martin Lewis:
- Keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day to stop sunlight heating rooms.
- Open windows strategically– open them at night or early morning when the air outside is cooler, then close them again during peak heat.
- Use fans smartly by placing a bowl of ice or frozen water bottles in front of them for a DIY cooling effect.
- Avoid using ovens and dryers in the daytime because they pump extra heat into the house.
- Stay hydrated and wear loose, light-coloured clothes.
- Cool the person, not the whole house – Use cold flannels, cool showers, or sit near a fan instead of trying to chill every room.
National Volunteers’ Week 2026
UK Volunteers’ Week (Monday 1 June to Sunday 7 June): Staff and Members will express their gratitude to our Volunteers through poems, testimonials, social media posts, and more! Also, on Tuesday 2 June (12:30-13:30), all members of Staff will serve lunch to our Volunteers so they can enjoy a relaxing and well-deserved lunch break! If you are not here regularly on Tuesdays and would like to join this lunch, please let Reception or Ines know by Friday 29 May (Ines.C.Jager@croydonvision.org.uk and 07732 320 660).
Nicola’s Note
Isn’t it hot!!
I hope you all had a sun filled bank holiday weekend and you are keeping cool in this heat. Please remember to stay hydrated, wear appropriate clothing, and take things at your own pace. We will be doing everything we can to keep the hall as cool and comfortable as possible.
It’s a slightly quieter week in terms of staffing, as several of the team are on well-earned leave. A big thank you in advance to Sarah, Daniel and Arleen, who will be covering reception and helping to keep everything running smoothly whilst Nima is away.
Looking ahead, I’m really excited about our upcoming Volunteer Celebration on Tuesday 2nd June. Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do, and this is an opportunity for us all to come together and say a huge thank you for their time, energy and commitment. I very much hope all of our volunteers can join us, and that many of you will come along too to show your appreciation.
Have a great week!
Nicola
