“I came to CV to take a look at the resource centre and I was surprised by the amount of gadgets that I did not know existed”.

When I first moved to London, everything felt overwhelming and unfamiliar. The bustling streets, the different accents, and the fast-paced lifestyle were a stark contrast to my previous home. However, my desire to integrate into this vibrant community led me to an opportunity that would forever change my perspective on life in London: volunteering at Croydon Vision.

My name is Hager, and I want to share with you my incredible journey as a volunteer at Croydon Vision. This organisation has not only provided me with a sense of belonging but has also allowed me to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

As I embarked on my first volunteering experience, I was filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension. The idea of contributing to a community that was new to me was both challenging and rewarding. Little did I know that this path would lead me to discover a profound sense of purpose.

Croydon Vision welcomed me with open arms, and I immediately felt like a part of their family. My role as a volunteer encompassed various activities, from assisting with mental aerobics sessions and yoga sessions to participating in engaging quiz groups. I even had the chance to lend a hand in the kitchen, where I got to know the members over a shared love for food.

What truly warms my heart is the time I spend with our visually impaired members. Engaging in activities and excursions with them has opened my eyes to the incredible strength and resilience of these individuals. Their determination to embrace life to the fullest despite their challenges is nothing short of inspiring.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey here has been learning and remembering the names of almost every member. The smiles that light up their faces when I address them by name are a testament to the power of connection. It’s a simple gesture, but it creates a warm and inclusive atmosphere that everyone appreciates.

Croydon Vision has been more than just a volunteer opportunity; it’s been a platform for my personal growth. I have gained valuable skills and experiences that I know will benefit me in my future endeavours. The sense of fulfilment that comes from helping others has left an indelible mark on my heart.

In conclusion, my journey as a volunteer at Croydon Vision has been a transformative experience. It has allowed me to immerse myself in a new culture, forge meaningful connections, and contribute to a community that I now proudly call my own. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside the remarkable individuals at Croydon Vision, and I am excited to continue this journey of empowerment, learning, and compassion.

Thank you for allowing me to share my story, and I look forward to the many more chapters of my volunteer journey at Croydon Vision.
